Why do gums recede?
Gum recession happens when the gums lose tissue. It results in the roots of the teeth being exposed. There are several causes for it: too aggressive brushing, not enough brushing or flossing, grinding the teeth (bruxism), and periodontal disease.
How is a receding gum line treated?
Our Sunnyvale dentist will determine the exact cause of the gum recession and then proceeds accordingly. If the patient is brushing his teeth too hard, he is counseled to do it properly. If it is periodontal disease, the dentist will take steps to treat it.
Why do people′s teeth become yellower as they get older?
Much of the blame for the yellowing of teeth can be put down to age. The enamel of the teeth grows thinner after a lifetime of use, and the underlying layer of dentin (which is of a yellow hue) becomes more evident. Poor dental hygiene can also contribute to the darkening of teeth in adults.
Why is a filled tooth sometimes sensitive to hot and cold?
If the filling is made of a material that is thermally conductive, such as silver amalgam, the tooth will be more sensitive to the temperature of the food or liquid, although it is not usually felt unless the food or liquid is very hot or very cold. If the sensitivity persists, the patient should consult his dentist.
What is the best kind of toothbrush I can get?
The brand of the toothbrush is not as important as its shape and the quality of its bristles. The head should be small so that you will have an easier time cleaning both sides of each tooth, and the bristles should be soft enough so that they do not harm the gums or abrade some of the enamel of your teeth while you are brushing.
